Here is a little snippet of the type of photography tips I’ll be covering.

I so often see people carefully posing their friends and family members next to something of interest and then standing waaaaay back to get everything in. I feel sorry for them, knowing that their treasured memory will include a photo of that interesting thing and a few specs of people lost in a sea of background. If you want to take a photo of your travel companions at some location, bring them in close to the camera and make a photo of them… keep the location in the background. This way, you’ll capture the joy of the moment but it will still be obvious where they are. Have a look at the two photos of Helen and our friend Lisa (with Tieka the Canine Landshark) while we were out snowshoeing at Mount Washington this winter:

This first image shows what so many people do, photograph their friends on the little bridge.

The second photo (below) shows a better way to do this, obviously in the same location, but I’ve brought my friends in close and captured the fun they’re having in the snow.

You may also notice, that by placing them with the sunlight behind them, they don’t have harsh shadows across their faces and the sun even highlights their hair nicely!
